Danilo Chammas is a lawyer and human rights defender who lives in Maranhão, a state of dense Amazon rainforest in northeastern Brazil. He coordinates the legal team of Justiça nos Trilhos (Justice on the Rails), which works to defend the human rights of those impacted by mining and steel projects in the region. He is an associate member of CEJIL (Center for Justice and International Law) and the Center for Defense of Life and Human Rights (CDVDH) of Açailândia. Danilo’s previous work includes being part of the legal team of the Human Rights Commission of the Municipality of São Paulo (2003-2004), and serving as Executive Secretary of the Inter-American Foundation for the Defense of Human Rights (2005-2008). Danilo holds a law degree from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo, and a Masters in Law from the University of Ottawa, Canada, revalidated by the University of Brasilia.
